Devising Lead (formerly Director)

I transitioned into a lead devisor role to create a more modern and inclusive approach to collaboration in solo performance similar to clown and ensemble theater. I devise with solo performers, physical theatre based clowns, and actors in San Francisco and New York.

Training on both coasts enables me to exchange new practices between them. I bring fresh physical theater and devising methods into Bay Area solo performance. New York clowns and actors regularly ask me to help them develop solo shows, so I’m bringing “story midwife” Joyful Raven from Berkeley Rep to co-teach a Brooklyn workshop in May of 2026. Our pedagogies are complementary, and I want to offer multiple approaches from the Bay Area.

My devising practice is rooted in my background at The Marsh and StageWerx in San Francisco.

At The Marsh in San Francisco, I assisted then co-taught and co-directed with Charlie Varon (“redefining the medium” -SF Chronicle ) in his solo theater workshops from 2010-2019. Together we codified a pedagogy of our shared teacher The Marsh Artist-in-Residence David Ford (“Dean of Solo Performance” -SF Chronicle) with our own approaches. After a decade, I became The Marsh’s third longest serving teacher. Our award winning students have performed at theaters and fringe festivals all over the world.

StageWerx Theater invited me to be its Director in Residence from 2021-2023 supporting Solo Sundays one of the longest running solo performance showcases in San Francisco. I was the in-house Solo Sundays coach for eleven years.
