I began directing students at The Marsh in San Francisco, where I assistant directed then co-directed with Charlie Varon in his solo performance workshops. Currently, I direct solo performers in showcases such as Solo Sundays, Tell It on Tuesday, and Monday Night Marsh. Students have gone on to perform all over the world.
My directing process begins with a script analysis to shift the student from writer to actor. We’ll break down the script into scenes, beats, and moments, and examine rhythm and tension. My character work draws from multiple traditions including . I like to use both outside-in and inside-out approaches when appropriate.
We’ll also work on gesture, movement, and visual composition. It’s been my experience that blocking and choreography are often overlooked by solo performers, but they’re critical to telling their stories. This may include collaborating with lighting designers, which I’ve done previously.
Long-term involvement in healing, recovery, and spirituality communities gives me a deep connection to solo performers with similar lived experience. I particularly love collaborating with formally trained comedic actors who also have access to their emotional life.
